Found in Pembroke

This friendly dog has been wondering in Pembroke, in the ITS/Radisson SAS area for the last 3 days. I believe it got lost or was abandoned in these past days since it is still very clean and well groomed. This dog seems very frightened and timid. At the moment we are giving him food and drink and is left sleeping in the common parts of our block of apartments. But obviously this can just be a temporary measure.

I am asking for your help to circulate this e-mail as much as possible to try and find the owner! I already called SPCA, Island Sanctuary and AAA but as you can imagine it's very difficult for them to accept more dogs since they are already full, although they promised to get back to me in case there is a vacancy. Further more if there is anyone who would like to take care of this beauty is more than welcome to contact  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Message from AAA in Malta

Our Sanctuary (AAA) is once again in very serious need of volunteers, especially during the week. All we ask is one morning a week from 9 am to 1 pm. Please come and help us out, you will have 120 dogs running about you and you will get lots and lots of wagging tails and wet kisses in return for your work. Please share this appeal and if you cannot come to help us out your self due to other commitments, kindly encourage others who may be in a position to offer us just one morning a week. Prior to going to sanctuary always please call Rosalind on 79730921. Thanks on behalf of our dogs.  "Association for Abandoned Animals", Valletta Road, Marsa Industrial Estate, Marsa ,  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Happy Paws on Net TV

Today, Moira with her producer Anita and cameraman Bernie were shooting a video at the clinic and shop in Santa Venera about the workings of Happy Paws  to be aired on Moira's program Animal Diaries on Net TV, next Friday at 18.50.

X-mas do for the Volunteers and Staff

Recently we held the annual X-mas party for our Volunteers, Staff and their families at the Marsa Sportsclub. A well appointed tea buffet gave the chance to meet-up with our fellow volunteers. Robert gave the customary state of the union and as it turned out, thanks to you all, we improved again considerably compared to last year. Polished off with a Raffle (no "do" without a raffle!) we wish everyone a Happy New Year.

About Microchipping

Following a recent article in the Times of Malta, questions have reached us about the safety of this procedure and particularly the risks of developing cancer/tumors. We would like to quote the American Veterinary Medical Association on this subject:

" In the 13 years since inception of the BSAVA's microchip adverse reaction program, 2 tumors have been reported despite microchip implantation in more than 3.7 million pets in the United Kingdom. The WSAVA Microchip Committee concluded that the benefits of microchip implantation far outweighed the potential health risks."

(The BSAVA is the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and the WSAVA is the World Small Animal Veterinary Association.)

Labour Party Visit

Recently a delegation from the Labour Party, headed by Dr. Joseph Muscat, visited our clinic. While meeting our volunteers and staff, we explained how Happy Paws works and had the opportunity to discuss animal welfare in general. We are always Happy to promote animal welfare, particularly in the political arena.

Christina and Liam

At present Christina and Liam are volunteering with us, Christina to get hands-on training for her 4th level extended diploma in Agriculture (animal care), done at the Mcast Agribusiness Institute and Liam is volunteering to see if becoming a Veterinarian would be his chosen future. We are confident this will help them with their further studies. Thank you for your help and good luck to both of you!

Marsaxlokk Market

With special permission from the Mayor of Marsaxlokk  we made our first appearance on the Marsaxlokk Sunday Market. With a select group of volunteers Terry, Monique, Terry2, Jacky and Maike,  we operated a successful bookstand. We made 143 Euro's for the clinic with sales and donations.

More Voluntourists!

Daniel Picazo and his sister Nuria are helping us for 2 weeks in the clinic. Daniel normally works  in the UK and the United States but also volunteers regularly, recently in Greece and Morocco. Nuria is a 4th year Vet-student at the University of Barcelona.  They are finding their way around the Island with the busses and to everybody's surprise, they are very happy with Arriva!

Jessica

Jessica Pavia  from De la Salle College worked with us this morning as part of her 20 hours school project. She chose us together with other veterinary clinics to get a detailed idea about veterinary clinics, surgery and general medical practice.

Thank you Jessica, and good luck with the rest of your project.

X-ray Machine

In our never-ending quest to provide a better service to our animal friends, we have now been able to acquire a state-of-the-art X-ray machine, thanks to all your generous donations. We thank Barbie, Richard and Oscar, X-ray specialists from the UK, instrumental in finding this equipment for us and then coming over to install everything to European standards, all free of charge! On top of that they presented us with a Pulse-Oximeter. You really made us proud guys. We keep on being humbled by the amount of support we encounter.

Welcome Amira

Amira from Houston Texas, 4th year Vet student at the Glasgow University has joined us for a few weeks to volunteer in the clinic. We wish her a good time and not just in the clinic!!

Busy volunteer weekend

Busy weekend for many of our staff, Saturday Dog's Trust Doggy day with a stall run by Barbie and Sarah and free consultations by Dr. Louise and Sunday in Naxxar with a stall again with Barbie, Anna, Maike, Wenza and Lino.

Welcome Louise and Sarah

This week we welcome our new Veterinary Surgeon Louise Forrest, who will be working alongside Victoria and we also welcome Sarah from ETC, our latest addition to the front desk. We wish them both Happy Times in the clinic.

Job Shadowing

This week we have Jake and Nolan from the St Margaret College Boys' Secondary School Verdala, volunteering with us, through the Job Shadowing Experience Scheme to get familiar with the workings of an animal clinic. Who knows, future Vets??

Happy Paws Books & Art

We have extended the Hamrun Charity Shop with a first floor (separate entrance) Books and Paintings department. Terry Bliss (here seen with her daughter Kate), a well known personality in the Malta animal welfare scene, has joined the Happy Paws family and taken it upon her to run it. With her love for literature, arts and her dedication to animal charity we are very proud to have her in our midst and wish her lots of pleasure and success. Terry appeals to book loving volunteers to join her in the shop.

Clinic Re-vamp

Over the Christmas holiday period we have changed the groundfloor reception area. We now have an extra examination room. Special thanks to Ad and Esin, Anthony, foreman Frans, Raymond and Hector, and all the Volunteers for cleaning on Sunday, getting it ready for re-opening on the 3rd.

Our 100th Adopted Dog

We have passed the 100 mark with our Adoption Scheme. We recently presented the Falzon family who adopted the 100th dog, lovely Timon with a hamper filled with goodies, provided by Tat-targa Kennels, Happy Dog foods and Loredana (grooming voucher). We wish little Timon a happy life with the Falzons.

Children's carnival clothing!

For those of you looking for something else this year, we have quite a collection of children's carnival costumes available at the shop in Santa Venera/Hamrun.

Star Reward Fund

We all remember the Star tragedy last year. A group of good Samaritans, the Star Reward Team consisting of Ms. Moira Delia, Mr. Roberto Calleia , Mr. Hermann Bonaci and Dr. Stefan Camilleri organised a reward fund for information leading to solve this animal abuse crime. Since the case was cleared up by the police, the team decided to donate the fund to 9 local animal NGO's. We were very happy to be one of them and were presented with €900.50 from this fund yesterday. Our thanks go out particularly to the general public who gave so generously. We will put this donation to good use for our stray animal friends.

We have created our own clinic "Star Fund", where this money will be used for treatment of strays with special needs. So Far with this fund we have already done extensive skin Grafts on a stray dog that is now recovering well at Island Sanctuary.

Well done Star Reward Team and we would like to endorse your motto: “Together we have made a difference.”

Happy Paws On D Road

Happy Paws joined the "On D Road" dog walk and bike ride last weekend. Huge crowds again with this very successful yearly happening. Louise seen here flying the flag with animal lover Mr. Austin Borg at the walk.

The next day at the Bike-Ride even more people turned up and Victoria and Lino   (seen here pictured with organisers Pierre and Nevise Caligari) were taken for a chilly ride half way round the Island.

"On D Road" Charity Walk and Ride

For the past 5 years, the popular TV show On D Road, organised a charity ride in aid of abandoned animals.  These events were always of a very huge success with the participation of over 957 bikers during last year’s ride.

In 2007, 2,300 Euros were collected in aid of AAA and a voucher refundable for food was given after the first ride! In 2008, over 7,000 Euros were collected in aid of SOS Animals Malta.  In 2009, the sum went up to 13,500 Euros.  Last year, the sum was even bigger, €23,000 all spread amongst Animal Sanctuaries and over 50 feeders in Malta.

This year, the producer of On D Road, Pierre Borg and Nevise Borg Caligari, producer of Pink Panther, are planning 2 other big events, the 5th Charity Ride + the 2nd Dog Walk in aid of all abandoned animals!

The money collected from these events, will be given out as vouchers of food & medicine to those sanctuaries and gold hearted people who are in most need.  These people collect injured and helpless animals from the street.   And thanks to them, these animals are then cured and taken care of.  Obviously for this to happen, a lot of money is required and most of the time, they pay these expenses out of their pocket.

The Dog Walk is planned for Saturday 7th January 2012, at 1pm, meeting at Animal Welfare Department. The aim of this event is to collect funds for the abandoned animals, promote adoption of dogs from AAA and the Animal Welfare Department and a silent protest against animal abuse.  We hear of daily abuse that happen in Malta, and this has to be stopped.  All dog owners are encouraged to join us, and those who don’t own a dog, can book by phoning on 2590 4132 between 14th – 23rd Dec’11 from 9am – 12pm and book a dog from the sanctuary.  For more details, join us on Facebook Page Pink Panther or our website www.pinkpanther.com.mt.

The Charity Ride will be held on Sunday 8th January 2012, meeting at Splash n Fun Car Park at 9.00am.  Final Destination will be at Incognito Bar & Restaurant, Qawra were there will be a bike show, music performed by Cash & Band and I’m not Johnny Cash, food & raffle.  All bikers and biker clubs are encouraged to join us towards this important cause.

For those who wish to help toward this charity event, donations are very welcome by sending an SMS on:

50617379 €2.33 / 50618078 €4.66 / 50618923 €6.99.

World Event To End Animal Cruelty

Saturday the 8th , we joined the the walk " World Event To End Animal Cruelty", from Pieta to the Palace in Valletta. Not a big crowd this time, maybe the threatening weather put some people off. Nevertheless it was a good happening with lots of people taking their dogs along. We still believe the more attention, the brighter the future of our animal friends.

More help!

We welcome Jennifer from Louisiana, a 4th year veterinary student at the University of Glasgow and Richard "Chip" from Pennsylvania, a final year Vet student also at the Glasgow University. They will be volunteering with us for 2 weeks. We wish them a good time!!

New Sterilizer!

With the substantial help of one of our dedicated sponsors we managed to acquire a new Autoclave Sterilizing Machine. Although it is called Nova it works like a dream. The old one was about to become obsolete and we would not be able to operate a proper clinic without this equipment. Thanks to everyone involved in this upgrade.

PartyTime!!

This Saturday we held a summer party to thank our Volunteers, our Sponsors, our Friends and their respective families for all their support. We were about 100! in total at the Marsa Sports Club Palm Grove. A well organised Bar-be-que, soothing?? sixties music by DJ's Dominique and Lino....(which led to some sing-alongs) and a dazzling fireworks display helped us through the evening !! Of course, the always popular raffle was also on the menu.

See Pam, Vivien and Lorena make their choice.

Our thanks go to The Marsa Sports Club for the use of the beautiful garden, to Albert, Angelo, Keith and his staff for the splendid catering, to Dominique for the music, to the community of Santa Venera for the fireworks and to all our guests for having a most enjoyable evening.

Yasmine

Meet Yasmine from Zabbar. Her Dad found this little puppy a couple of days ago hiding under a car desperately in need of food and TLC. Although the family already has another dog, they decided to give this little one a loving home. Yasmine has decided to call her Misty. The family brought Misty in for a general check up and fortunately she seems to be in good health after being properly fed by Yasmine. We wish her and Misty a long lasting friendship.

Meet Kay

Our latest voluntourist, a graduate Vet student from Glasgow University, helping us out for a few weeks, seen here assisting Louise with an operation. If some of you were wondering....., the metal thing on her back is a GPS transmitter, so we can follow her every move....

Thank you Rita Buhagiar

Due to other engagements, Rita Buhagiar had to close down her Birkirkara Happy Paws Shop.

We thank Rita for all the work she has done for us and wish her a Happy future.

Walk for STAR

We joined the silent walk for Star today and we were not alone, hundreds of people, many with their pets attended this event. It was quite impressive to see so many with a big heart for our animal friends.

Visit from GO

With great pleasure we received a visit from Maria Jourdan and Vanessa McDonald who visited the clinic as representatives of one of our sponsors GO. Both ladies had encouraging words for our patients, who were awaiting their surgery. We thank them for their interest and enjoyable visit.

Voluntourists!

We have welcomed the first of the summer tourist-volunteers. A great way of combining a holiday with volunteering work. Lindsey and Valerie from California, who are both Veterinary students at the University of Glasgow, are now spending a week with us. Before coming to Malta they were in Corfu in Greece, volunteering at a donkey sanctuary. We hope they will enjoy the hands-on clinic-work and get to know a little bit about life in Malta.

New Faces at Happy Paws!

In our recent drive to attract new personnel we welcome Barbie Matthews, an Award winning fully qualified Vet Nurse. In 2007 she was announced the Petplan Vet Nurse of the year in the U.K. We are proud to have her at the clinic and wish her Happy times with us. In the coming weeks our new Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Louise Forrest will join the ranks. Over the summer we will host a number of "Voluntourists", mainly Vet-students from abroad, for shorter and longer periods.

Ten Thousand Animals Treated!

Today it was coffee and cake in the shops and the clinic. Another decimal milestone on the Happy Paws tree. We celebrated our 10.000th patient, the neutering of a small stray cat.  All thanks to our marvelous group of Volunteers, Members, Supporters and of course the General Public for frequenting our shops in Marsaskala and Sta Venera/Hamrun, bringing in goods to sell or buying them.

Dog Walk and Bike Ride

Over the weekend we joined both the Dog Walk and the Bike Ride. As you can see, we were not the only ones. Maike and Lino were flying the flag for Happy Paws. We would like to congratulate our friends from PinkPanther and OnDERoad with organising these fantastic venues so well and all for the sake of abandoned animals.  Prosit...

X-mas do at the clinic.

Last Saturday we held the annual Christmas party for our volunteers and their families at the clinic.

A good chance to get together, swap stories and renew friendships. Robert gave a review of the financial state of the union and Maike supervised our youngest volunteers Isabella and Frank with the customary raffle.

We planned to present the Falzon family, who recently adopted the 100th dog "Timon", through our adoption scheme with a hamper filled with goodies from Tat-targa Kennels, Happy Dog foods and a grooming voucher from Loredana, but unfortunately their baby was ill so we will have to do that at another occasion.
